ISLAMABAD:(APS)December 10, 2016-President Mamnoon Hussain has urged the world powers to take notice of grave human rights violations in occupied Kashmir and Palestine.
He was addressing a function in connection with international human rights day in Islamabad today.
Mamnoon Hussain said the world community should carefully craft its policies that do not impinge the rights of others.
He regretted that in different parts of the world including occupied Kashmir and Palestine, the people have been deprived of their right to self determination. He said the occupying forces are subjecting the defenseless and armless people in these territories to persecution. He said responsibility rests with the world community especially the main powers to take notice of this grave situation for peace and stability.
Turning to the human rights situation in the country, Mamnoon Hussain said several steps have been taken to protect the rights of women and minorities. In this regard, legislation such as the one on honor killing has also been done.
Mamnoon Hussain pointed out the ratio of charity in Pakistan is very high when compared with any other country of the world. He said this money is used for the assistance of deprived segments of the society. He, however, said that such steps are also required that bring these deprived segments to the national mainstream so that they could also contribute to the national development.
Earlier, the President also gave away awards to the activists who rendered matchless work in the domain of human rights protection. These included people belonging to different walks of life including poets, singers and parliamentarians.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Human Rights Kamran Micheal said that the ministry has taken a number of steps for the protection of the rights of women, children, transgenders and deprived segments of the society. He said that a Complaint Cell has been set up at the Ministry of Human Rights to provide assistance to the general public for safeguarding their rights. He said that Human Rights committees have been set up at the district level.
On the occasion a documentary on human rights situation in Pakistan was also screened.
Kamran Micheal along with renowned singer Shafqat Salamat Ali Khan presented a song in connection with the day.
President Mamnoon Hussain, Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, Minister for Human Rights Kamran Micheal and the participants of the ceremony also signed the “Stand Up for Someone’s Rights” screen board.
