ISLAMABAD:(APS)Jan 13,2016-Senate sub-committee of Standing Committee on Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage in its meeting recommended constituting a complete board of members or commission for the Implementation Tribunal of Newspaper Employees (ITNE) so that services of the tribunal are available in provincial headquarters readily. At present the Tribunal only has a chairman.
The meeting of the sub-committee was chaired by its convener Senator Mushahidullah Khan here at the Parliament House on Wednesday. The meeting was primarily aimed at discussing the Journalists Protection and Welfare Bill, 2011 with ministry of Information and four primary journalist bodies PFUJ, CPNE, PPA and APNS. However, other than the ministry and PFUJ, none other cody sent their representatives and did not intimate beforehand. The committee expressed displeasure over this attitude of the three bodies which has similarly failed to turn up in the previous meeting.
The Secretary Information was asked to contact the journalist bodies and press clubs to collect their recommendations over the bill. The members of the committee also recommended that the bill should clearly and distinctly define responsibilities of the government and owners of media organisations for ensuring safety of journalists.
The committee decided to write to the Punjab Government to obtain more information regarding the arrest of 7 people from Lahore who were planning to attack media houses. The raid on The Nation’s resident editor in Islamabad last night was also condemned. The committee also asked for earlier resolution of pending salaries of people associated with Bol TV as the unpaid journalists and other staff is facing financial problems.
The meeting was attended among others by Senator Rubina Khalid, Senator Sassi Palejo, Senator Najma Hameed, Secretary Information and Principal Information Officer.
