ISLAMABAD:(APS) August 5, 2016-The 251st session of the Senate began in Islamabad on Friday afternoon with Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani in the chair.
This special session has been convened in connection with the commemoration of the 44th Foundation Day of the Senate being observed on Saturday.
At the outset of the session, Chairman Senate said Parliament will continue its struggle for the betterment of the people and strengthening of the national values.
Initiating the discussion, PML-N senator Mushahidullah Khan said the Senate has equal representation of all the federating units.
He said due to struggle of the people, political workers and political parties the democracy has been strengthened in the country.
Leader of the Opposition, Aitzaz Ahsan said that presence of the leadership from both the Houses in the session is reflection of the fact that both the houses of the parliament have unanimous views on the issues of national interest. He said that both the House will continue cooperation in future for the welfare of the country.
Deputy Chairman Senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri said that all the parliamentarians are united for strengthening democracy and democratic institutions. He said we are working for safeguarding the constitution.
Taking part in the discussion, the members said the real beauty of the Senate is that it has equal representation of all the provinces irrespective of their population.
They said the Senate of Pakistan is defender and protector of the federation. They demanded that the Senate should be given financial and other powers equal to the National Assembly.
The Senate also passed a unanimous resolution reiterating its commitment to play its constitutional role of defending and safeguarding the rights and interests of the Federation, Federating Units and Citizens of Pakistan.
The resolution moved by Leader of the Opposition, Aitzaz Ahsan paid tributes to the unsung heroes of democracy, political workers and common people of the country who sacrificed their lives and liberty to uphold the constitution of Pakistan.
It also paid tributes to the predecessors who worked hard to maintain the dignity and status of the Senate of Pakistan.
The resolution appreciated the inclusion of the members of the Senate in the Public Accounts Committee.
The resolution resolved to continue its struggle for the enhancement of the role and powers of the Senate in order to make Pakistan a true federation as envisaged by the constitution.
The resolution pledged to continue its struggle for safeguarding the interests of the country in the wake of emerging regional and global realities.
Those who spoke on the occasion include Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo, Mushahid Hussain Syed, Muhammad Talha Mahmood, Syed Tahir Husain Mashhadi, Usman Kakar, Ilyas Bilour, Sirajul Haq, Dr. Karim Ahmad Khawaja, Shibli Faraz, Saeed Ghani, Hidayat Ullah, Abdul Qayyum, Mir Kabeer Ahmad, Mian Muhammad Ateeq, Nehal Hashmi, Saleem Zia, Javed Abbasi, Taj Haider, Sehar Kamran, Sitara Ayaz, Rehman Malik, Sardar Azam Musa Khel, Salahuddin Tirmizi, Ghous Muhammad Khan Niazi, Muhammad Ali Saif and Shahi Syed.
The chair announced that in connection with the 44th Foundation Day of Senate, a seminar will be held in Islamabad tomorrow morning on the topic ” Challenges to the Federation and Role of the Senate”. He said the launching ceremony of two publications of the Senate Secretariat will also be held during the seminar. He said the leading daily newspapers will publish special supplements on the Foundation day of Senate.
