ISLAMABAD:(APS)Jan 19,2016-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said Pakistan’s top priority is to defuse tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Talking to media in Tehran this evening, he said that Pakistan considers defusing Saudi-Iran tension as sacred mission and both brethren countries hailed the Pakistan’s efforts for mediating role.
Expressing satisfaction over his visits of Saudi Arabia and Iran, the Prime Minister said Pakistan will appoint a focal person on Saudi-Iran issue and sincere efforts are being done in this regard.
He said Saudi Arabia and Iran are aware about the potential threat of terrorism. He said extremism and terrorism are common threats and joint efforts needed to overcome it. Earlier, the Prime Minister had a meeting with the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
Members of the Iranian cabinet were also present in the meeting.
Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, National Advisor on Security, Retired Lt General Nasir Khan Janjua and Special Assistant to Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi were also present in the meeting.
On his arrival in Tehran, the Prime Minister was warmly received by Iranian Defence Minister and high officials at the airport.
Later, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with Iranian Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan.
During flight from Riyadh to Tehran, the Prime Minister held consultative meeting with Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif and other officials on Pakistan-Iran relations.
The meeting also reviewed talks with Saudi leadership in connection with Saudi Iranian stand-off. Army Chief Raheel Sharif and Iranian Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan held a meeting in Tehran.
According to ISPR, they discussed different issues related to regional security situation.
The COAS reiterated that Pakistan takes Iran as very important neighbouring Muslim country as well as people have a great affinity with Iranian brothers.
Meanwhile, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif has said that regional security and stability is paramount and stressed the need for opening up of communication channels between Iran and Saudi Arabia to defuse tension.
He was talking to Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, who is also military advisor to the Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenai in Tehran.
During the meeting, matters related to regional security came under discussion.
