ISLAMABAD (APS) Oct 26,2015— A strong earthquake in northern Pakistan was felt across much of South Asia on Monday, shaking buildings from Kabul,Peshawar,Islamabad,Gujrat,Sialkot to Delhi and cutting power and communications in some areas.
Reportedly, 150 people have been killed and five hundreds have been injured across the country.
The quake was felt across the country. In Islamabad, buildings shook and people poured into the streets in a panic, with many reciting verses from the Quran.
An earthquake measuring 8.1 at Richter scale jolted most parts of the country at 2.09 p.m. on Monday.
The areas include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The epicenter of the quake was Hindukush region and its depth was 193 kilometers.
The tremors were so strong that people came out of their homes and offices. Windowpanes of some buildings were broken.
Mobile service in some parts of the country has been affected due to tremors.
The tremors also hit several areas of India, Occupied Kashmir and Afghanistan.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed all federal civil, military and provincial agencies to declare immediate alert and mobilize all resources to ensure security of citizens.
All agencies have been directed to move out with their resources to find out the welfare of the country. No stone should be left unturned to provide all kinds of assistance.
Meanwhile, Army troops have been directed to carry out immediate rescue work in any affected areas.
According to ISPR, they have been asked not to wait for formal orders in this regard.
In a snap conference, Army Chief General Raheel Sharif directed Army teams for quick assessment of earthquake damages across country especially remote areas.
Army teams have left for different areas to participate in rescue and relief efforts.
Army troops have been mobilized and all CMHs put on high alert.
Specialized earthquake rescue machinery has been put on alert.
Army helicopters have also been mobilized to meet any eventuality.
