ISLAMABAD: (APS) – Justice Sardar Raza has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, APS News reported. The notification of his appointment has been issued. Chief Justice Federal Shariat Court Sardar Raza has also expressed willingness to assume the office of Chief Election Commissioner. He said that he will resign from the post of Chief Justice Federal Shariah Court immediately after assuming the CEC office.
The meeting of parliamentary committee for decision on the name of CEC was presided over by Chairman of the committee Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana on Thursday. Committee thoroughly examined the candidatures of Justice Sardar Raza, Justice (r) Tariq Pervaiz and Justice (r) Tanveer Ahmad Khan. Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Islamuddin Sheikh suggested Justice Sardar Raza’s name and all the members agreed upon his name.
Rafique Rajwana said on this occasion that the committee chose the best option out of the three names it was given. He said that Opposition Leader Syed Khurshid Shah played an important role for strengthening the democratic institutions.
Responding to a question, Rafique Rajwana said that Spokesperson of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Dr. Sheerien Mazari has already said that all three names were honorable. “Absence of one member of the committee does not make any difference”, he said.
The 12-member committee included six members of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) including Rafique Rajwana, Captain Safdar, Arshad Legahari, Dr. Darshan, Sardar Yaqoob Nasir and Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. All six members of PML-N attended the meeting. All three members of PPP also attended the meeting. PPP members included Shazia Marri, Ayaz Soomro and Islamuddin Sheikh. Awami National Party’s (ANP) Hajid Adeel and Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Dr. Farooq Sattar also attended the meeting. PTI’s Shehryar Afridi did not attend the committee meeting.
