FETO’s Coup Attempt in Turkey was test of strength of democracy:Turk Ambassador

ISLAMABAD:July 14, 2017- Turkey Ambassador in Pakistan, Saadiq Babar, addressed a seminar on Friday at National Press Club on the Anniversary of failed coup attempt in Turkey. The coup attempt was held on July 15th, 2016 which targeted the two main cities of Turkey, including its capital Ankara and Istanbul.

Saadiq Babar added that ‘FETO used fighter jets, helicopter, and tanks against the innocent people of Turkey. They bombed on Presidential Palace and parliament in order to assassinate Prime Minister and President. The effort was made to take control of Turkey State. People living in Turkey belong from different backgrounds, gave an example of solidarity.’ He also said that ‘FETO is a new generation of the terrorist organization. The government is still struggling to overcome the trauma. As we are investigating everything according to law, therefore it is taking time.’

He claimed that ‘Almost 30,000 people who were suspended and investigated returned to their jobs.’ He said, ‘They are against the rule of, law and we use the rule of law, they are against morality, and we use morality, they are against democracy, and we are supporters of democracy. To fight against determinants of democracy is through democracy itself and it is what Turkey is doing’. He thanked Pakistanis for being with Turkey in all difficult times.

Ambassador Bosnia, Dr. Nadeem, said ‘When Bosnia was in need from 1992 to 1995, Turkish people helped Bosnia how they could. This was not just a military coup, and this is how we Muslims need to understand, we need to be aware of the forces which can be damaging for Muslim states.’ He added, ‘Turkish Nation showed how brave and politically aware they are.’

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan and vice chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, also chaired the seminar. He while expressing his feelings for a brotherly country, Turkey, said ‘People of Pakistan and Turkey love each other. Turkey always stood with Pakistan through all thick and thin. What was witnessed on 15th July 2016, is something extraordinary? Turkey foreign policy is undergoing change. Turkey is not ignoring Nation shift. Turkey people trust their government and the electoral process’. He added that ‘Today it is needed that we learn from Turkey. It is a moment of decision for Pakistan. Pakistanis must also stand for transparent electoral process and independent electoral commission. Every democratic mind must have room for opposition. We are happy to see stable democratic government in Turkey’.

At the end of seminar, Afzal Butt President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) and Shakeel Anjum President of National Press Club, presented a shield to Turkish ambassador.
