ISLAMABAD:(APS)Oct 6,2015-Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif chaired a high level meeting at PM House Islamabad on issues faced by the agricultural sector, facilitation to farmers and to review the implementation of ‘Kissan’ package. The meeting was attended by Mr. Muhammad Ishaq Dar Minister for Finance, Mr. Salman Aslam Butt Attorney General of Pakistan, Mr. Ashtar Ausaf Ali Special Assistant to PM and other senior officers.
Prime Minister was briefed that the demand and prices of Pakistan’s Agricultural commodities fell sharply in the international commodity market in the last two years and the loss of production was also recorded because of environmental stress. These conditions caused great unrest amongst the farming community and there were demands for Government’s support. PM was further apprised that the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform and the Ministry of National Food Security & Research undertook consultations with the relevant stakeholders and all the provincial governments.. Subsequently, under the supervision of the Prime Minister, “Kissan” package was announced as a relief package for the farming community of Pakistan.
Finance Minister apprised that the provisions of the “Kissan” package were already part of the Budget speech for 2015-16 and for confirmation his budget speech and concluding speech of the budget session could be referred to. Moreover, the support measures of Rs. 5,000 per acre to the farmers to the extent of 12.5 acres, 2% reduction in rate of interest for rice and cotton growers and rise from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 4,000 in Production Index Units (PIU) of agricultural land included in the ‘Kissan’ package are genuine demands of the farmers and are applicable to the entire country.
Prime Minister directed the Attorney General of Pakistan to file a petition in the appropriate judicial forum against the suspension of certain provision that facilitate the farmers in the ‘Kissan’ package after the Election Commission’s decision.
PM said that the ‘Kissan’ package is for the farmers of entire nation and is not specific to any region and it is the right of all the country’s farmers. PM further said that the farmer community throughout Pakistan is suffering due to non-implementation of Kissan package.
PM said that the government is working to protect farmers’ rights and is working without any political or regional bias.
PM also in-principle approved the establishment of agricultural research Endowment Fund for enhancing research on agriculture to maximize produce.
