ISLAMABAD:(APS)Nov 9,2015-Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of Pakistan Muslim League (N) has been re-elected as the speaker of National Assembly.
Ayaz Sadiq secured two hundred and sixty eight votes while his rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s Shafqat Mahmoud secured 31 votes.
The members present in the House congratulated Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. He is 20th Speaker of the National Assembly.
Later, acting Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi administered oath of office to newly elected Speaker.
Addressing the house after taking oath, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq thanked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his party for reposing confidence in him.
He also thanked the political parties who supported him in the election of the speakership.
Sardar Ayaz said he also thanks the PTI workers who participated in the process for the strengthening of the system. He said this is not his personal win but that of the democracy.
He said all the political parties will work together for the strengthening of the system.
Sardar Ayaz assured he will play an active role in cooperation with all the political parties to make the parliament more vibrant. He said efforts will be made to further strengthen the role of standing committees.
The Speaker said Kashmir cause has been on the agenda of the House and it will be taken forward to highlight the issue at the international level.
He said the Parliament will be shifted to solar energy next month.
In his speech, defeated candidate Shafqat Mahmood congratulated Ayaz Sadiq on his victory and assured him full cooperation in the House. He underlined the need for reforms in the electoral system to strengthen the democracy.
Opposition leader Syed Khurshid Shah while congratulating Ayaz Sadiq on his victory for the second time, he said we should work together for the success of the democratic system.
Khurshid Shah said his re-election as is recognition of his services as Speaker National Assembly in the past years.
Sahibzada Tariqullah congratulated Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for his election as Speaker and Shafqat Mahmood for contesting the election.
Ghazi Gulab Jamal said highlighted the problems of FATA and urged the government to take effective steps to solve them.
Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour said it was better if the Speaker was elected unopposed.
Meanwhile, President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif have congratulated Ayaz Sadiq on becoming Speaker of the National Assembly.
In a message, PM Nawaz Sharif applauded the role of Ayaz Sadiq in upholding democratic traditions in the parliament.
The Prime Minister stated that Ayaz Sadiq will maintain those standards in coming years.
