Dr. Muhammad Usman Khan Chairman, Institute of Health & Management Sciences,is distributing prizes certificates during seminar on “Smoking Kills” at Islamabad on Nov 21,2015.
ISLAMABAD:(APS)Nov 21,2015-The Institute of Health & Management Sciences, Islamabad along with the collaboration of Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad conducted a health promotion seminar on the “Smoking kills”. The primary objective of conducting this seminar was to raise awareness among the students regarding the harmful effects of smoking and its grave consequences on human health. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Mariam Anees, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Quaid-i-Azam University along with the Master’s students of public health from the Institute of Health & Management Sciences.
The resource persons during the presentation mentioned that according to the latest research, tobacco smoke contains around 70 chemicals which are carcinogenic in nature. The risk of developing various cancers especially that of mouth, throat and lungs increases manifolds in people who smoke as compared to those who do not smoke. In Pakistan, every single day, around 298 people die due to diseases directly caused by tobacco smoke and this is an extremely alarming figure. Although there has been legislation in our country regarding smoking in public areas, yet it has not been implemented in the most effective manner. It is high time now that all of us join our hands and strive hard for the tobacco control in our country so that we can make it a safer place for our future generations to come.
On this occasion, a poster competition was also organized among the students. Around 35 students participated in the poster competition whose theme was anti-smoking. At the end of the seminar, Chairman, Institute of Health & Management Sciences, Dr. Muhammad Usman Khan distributed prizes as well as certificates of participation among first, second, and third position holding students.
The Institute of Health & Management Sciences, Islamabad is currently conducting Master of Science in Public Health and Doctor of Physical Therapy program in affiliation with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University. The sole aim of the institute is to make the health status of the Pakistani population better and improve the quality of life of common people by producing qualified and competent public health professionals.
