ISLAMABAD:(APS)APRIL 14,2016-The Senate was informed on Thursday that the country has a marginal storage capacity of 14 million acre feet of water out of annually available 137 MAF.
During the question hour, replying to questions by members, Minister of State Jamal Kamal Khan said this constitutes just 10% of total water against the minimum threshold set by international experts as 30%.
He said if no new dams are constructed then there would be an acute shortage of water for irrigation in the country.
The Minister of State said the storage capacity of existing dams is decreasing gradually due to sedimentation.
Jam Kamal said Neelum Jhelum project is expected to complete in August next year at a cost of over 404 billion rupees.
To another question he said the government is pursuing Gwadar to Nawabshah gas pipeline project. The 700 kilometer pipeline would cost 1.6 billion dollar.
Minister of State for Religious Affairs Pir Aminul Hasnat told the house that in the new Hajj Policy the quota of private tour operators has been reduced by ten percent.
Replying to supplementaries, he said the Government has taken a number of measures to safeguard interests of those proceeding on Hajj through private tour operators.
Minister of State for Health Saira Afzal Tarar told the house that Prime Minister’s Fee Reimbursement Programme is successfully being implemented throughout the country including in Balochistan.
Responding to a calling attention notice by Mir Kabeer Ahmad, she said on the contrary ,allocations for programme have been increased from 500 million rupees to 1.8 billion rupees and its coverage extended from 52 to 114 districts of the country.
The Senate has passed the Pakistan Baitul Mal (Amendment) Bill 2016 unanimously.
It was moved by Minister of State Aftab Sheikh.
Another bill moved by Minister of State for Health Saira Afzal Tarar “Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (Amendment) Bill 2016 was referred to the Standing Committee concerned for report before 19th of this month.
Minister of State Jam Kamal Khan moved National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Bill 2016 which was also referred to the Standing Committee concerned for report.
Minister of State for Capital Administration and Development informed the house that CDA revoked the NOC issued to National Police Foundation Islamabad for violation of rules and layout plan.
Responding to a calling attention notice by Muhammad Azam Khan Swati, he said management of the housing scheme indulged in China cutting of plots.
Mushahid Hussain moved a motion for to discuss the issue of Panama Papers. The discussion will start tomorrow morning when the house re-assembles at 10.30.
