PFUJ will not allow Govt. to trample Press Freedom: Afzal Butt President PFUJ

ISLAMABAD:(APS) May 2,2017- The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has dedicated the Press Freedom Day to “Dawn” newspaper for upholding the principles of journalism and refusing to succumb under any government pressure to reveal the source of its story.

The Press Freedom Day is observed all over the world on May 3 to raise awareness of the importance of the Freedom of Press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.

Journalists across the country will be holding demonstrations outside the “Dawn Offices” to express their solidarity with their colleagues working in that organization.

PFUJ dedicated this day to “Dawn” which is still under threat of “disciplinary action”, as directed by the government to APNS. PFUJ has already rejected this “so-called” disciplinary action.

Journalists organizations, affiliated with PFUJ, will hold rallies in front of “Dawn” offices in the Federal Capital, all the four provincial capitals besides other cities where “Dawn” offices are located, to express their solidarity with the newspaper.

In Federal Capital the demonstration will be led by PFUJ President Afzal Butt, RIUJ acting President Nasir Hashmi and Secretary Ali Raza Alvi.

In Karachi journalists will take out the rally from Press Clun and march up to the head quarter of Dawn situated on Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad road. The rally would be led by PFUJ Secretary General Ayub Jan Sarhandi, KUJ President Hasan Mansoor and Secretary Faheem Sadique.

In Lahore, a delegation of journalists, led by PUJ President Gohar Butt went to the the office Dawn on Tuesday to express solidarity with colleagues from dawn. On Wednesday they will hold a demonstration outside the press club in Lahore.

In Sukkar a rally will be taken out from press club and which will march through the road to Dawn office and hold solidarity demonstration.

In Haiderabad journalists will hold  a seminar on press freedom at Haiderabad Press Club and later will take out a rally from press club and march to the office of Dawn.

A delegation of Gujranwala Union of Journalists led by its President Raja Habib, Secretary Adil Akram and PFUJ Assistant Secretary Yasir Jutt vested Dawn office to show solidarity and expressed their commitment to uphold the freedom of expression at all cost and they will launch a demonstration from press club tomorrow.

In Multan journalists will organize a rally outside the Dawn office it will be led by PFUJ Exective member Shakeel Ahmad and Former President MUJ Rauf Maan.

In Rahimyar Khan Union of Journalists , led by its president Tariq Mehmood and PFUJ FEC member Ehsan ulhaq will hold a rally.

Journalists in Peshawar, led by PFUJ vice president bakht zada will hold a solidarity show infront of Dawn office in the city.

In Quetta journalists will organize demonstration outside Quetta Press Club which will be led by PFUJ Vice President Saleem Shahid, President BUJ Khalil Ahmad and Secretary Ayub Tareen.

They will also reaffirm their commitment to uphold the freedom of the Press, which remains persistently under threat from government and other state institutions.
